The first drawers or pantaloons appeared in the early 19th century when the dresses got really thin and there wasn't enough space for all the former undergarments. The middle seam of these drawers wasn't sewn together, hence you didn't need to pull them down and worry about not being able to go to the bathroom. Closed drawers with a flap in their back only showed at the turn to the 20th century.
